I carry a rod n reel in my BOB, however these tend to get broken.

So what do you do when you need a castable rod n reel?
I know everyone can tie a line to a stick but can you make a casting pole with usually availible materials and the reel?

All you need is a few soda can tabs from discarded trash, a good stick and a small amount of cordage which we should all have anyway or may even be able to obtain from plants such as the yucca (see http://www.survivalandpreparednessforum.com/showthread.php?2074-Yucca-Plant-Cordage&highlight=yucca ).

What other ideas do you all have?

It was suggested that wire could easily be found so here is an example of how to make an eyelet with some old wire.

Matt that is awesome. I am going to show this to my younger brother.....he will be ticked he didn't think of this when we were kids camping out in the woods for 3 days catching fish with nets we made from mesh football jerseys tied to a couple of sticks....our homemade net...

Matt, you did it again! I have one of those mini fishing kits contained in a plastic kit the size of a mint can. I always figured I'd tie the line on the end of a stick, but the coke tab idea is priceless. I'll have to update my kit.

I don't have a reel, don't really know how to use them. As a child, I went with my father and grandfather and used a cane pole while they did the reel bid. You can catch a lot of brim and catfish with a cane pole!

Nice, i have used bamboo (for a cane pole) and soda cans for a hobo fishing reel, but this is unique

I guess I'm going to have to make a 'real' redneck fishin' rig fer ya ;)
You know, the kind where you use a coke can for casting.

I keep trotlines and a gill net, made of monofilament line in my BOB, many, many times better for foraging than any hand held line or pole or rod. I can make fish traps, too. The nets, etc, work for me 24-7, in several areas at once.

I just traded a masterful homeless guy some hygene supplies and a few bucks for a "consult" ...
... I was eating some chili, at Wendy's, and this street-guy sat down, near me ...
His name was Steve and, aside from his tattered gear and a dirty shirt, he really did seem to have his "stuff" together.
He had obviously been on the street, for over a year, ... not a drunk ... did not stink ... about ~40 years old ... White guy.
I told him I had some surplus gear and a few bucks to trade, for a consult, on his methods and procedures ... DEAL !
One of the things he told me was how to make a Mexican Fishing Reel ... by wrapping line around a soup can and, like a spin-caster, you swing weighted free-line around and let it fly ... like David's Sling ... allowing the line to feed from the end of the can ...
... He also mentionned putting the can on a stick, or branch, etc., with a security knot ...
... He told me it works ... Sounds like it surely would.

's all.

Like alot of things it would take some practice. The "reel" would be good to have if a bigger fish was on to keep the line from digging into the hands. It's easier to throw standing too, now to go fix that trailor light

My sound card is fried but I can see what you are doing ... YOU ARE GOOD and YOU ARE FAST !

That is "pretty much" what I had envisionned BUT ... Try THIS ....

Hold the (empty) can in your LEFT HAND, at your RIGHT HIP (or at your belly) ... Use your RIGHT HAND to swing/throw the line ... USING your LEFT finger or thumb to control the "release" .... SO ... Your left thumb (lets say) is retaining/keeping the line on the can but your RIGHT hand is doing the swinging and throwing ... THEN ... (if you wish) ... you may opt to place the empty can over a stick (in the mud) or to run any number of lines, as you nap or tend to other tasks ... SOMEthing like that.

I am also guessing that your swing-line can be as long as the inseam of your pants, if you want the swing-plane to be vertical ... or ... the free-line can be even longer if you wish to swing it over your head ... like roping a calf or cracking a bull-whip ... or ... you could even swing on the diagonal and release it on the up-swing, for maximum distance ... Hmmm?

Matt ... you are SO cool !
